My name is Rachel, the heart behind The ADHD Social Worker.
I am a proud AuDHDer (Autistic + ADHD) and an AASW accredited Social Worker. My pronouns are she/her.
I have a passion for supporting other neurodivergent adults to thrive, that's why I started The ADHD Social Worker.
I was diagnosed with ADHD in my early twenties. My journey has been incredibly rewarding but it hasn't been without struggles. Getting an ADHD diagnosis later in life brought many unique challenges, limiting my access to much-needed support in a timely manner.
Despite years of self-advocacy, I faced disbelief and dismissive reactions, with the recurring advice to just "try harder", from well-intentioned but ill-advised family and friends, but also from medical professionals.
The lack of understanding, validation, and support made me feel constantly overwhelmed, leading to ongoing shame, self-doubt, and low self-esteem, and internalisation of the message that I just needed to try harder.
This is not uncommon of the late diagnosed ADHD experience, but for those that have a neurodevelopmental disability such as ADHD, this type of message can be detrimental.
ADHD is a lifelong disability, and it is important not to minimise or invalidate the very real and difficult challenges it brings.
As an adult, post diagnosis was incredibly challenging. I felt as though I was left without much support or knowledge on a clear path out, even with my professional experience as a social worker.
Not having access to targeted support and knowledge as a late diagnosed adult made the challenge of healing that much harder.
As an accredited social worker I've had the privilege of working with many clients from varying walks of life.
From providing trauma-informed case management, to therapeutic counselling my experiences have helped to shape both my social work practice, therapy and coaching styles.
My focus is on empowerment and self-determination and specialise in providing neuroaffirming, strength-based, and goal-oriented support.
As a neurodivergent, white, cisgender woman, I acknowledge the privileges I hold and am dedicated to creating a culturally safe, gender-affirming, and inclusive space. My practice prioritises respect, humility, and support for each individual’s unique experiences and identities.
